Hormonal fluctuations are the imbalance in reproductive hormones, mainly the diminishing estrogen levels as the ovaries cease function beginning from perimenopause to menopause and post-menopause.

Decrease in estrogen levels accelerates loss of collagen and elastin leading to thinner skin with decreased elasticity and firmness, increased wrinkles and sagging. Uneven deposits of elastin fibers lead to a unique skin condition called elastosis, marked by hardened, wrinkled and crepey skin with a cobblestone appearance. Skin cell turnover is decelerated leading to dullness and rough texture. Estrogen deficiency causes skin barrier impairment and inability to hold water leading to dry, flaky skin.
